Our Rich History

By the grace of God, on January 3, 1999, we begin meeting and holding service each Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. in the old Murfreesboro Middle Tennessee Electric Membership Corporation (MTEMC) building, located on Maple Street downtown. After a brief time of meeting on Maple Street at the Murfreesboro Electric Building, God made it possible and Elder B. L. Russell met with the officials of Smithfork District Association for us to have use of the Tabernacle located at 2701 Halls Hill Pike on a weekly basis beginning March 1999. Once again, God demonstrates His faithfulness by moving us from one place to another without any interruption in service. God’s blessings continued without fail. It was at this location that we began to have Sunday School on September 5, 1999 at 9:00 a.m. each Sunday and Bible Study and Prayer Meeting on Wednesday.

On June 20, 1999, we had assembled for a church meeting and it was out of the meeting that God led us in giving a name to the mission work. Several names had surfaced and Elder Russell stated that God had placed in his spirit that the name should be called Antioch. Acts 11:26 states that it was at Antioch that they were first called Christians. All who were present wholeheartedly accepted this name. God continued to bless us and we continued to grow. Many came as candidates for baptism.

In October of 1999, we were once again in Business Conference and the discussion came up about moving from the status of Mission to Church. It was unanimously agreed that we would seek help from the elders of the Cumberland Primitive Baptist Association to help in this work. Elder Russell made contact with the moderator of the Cumberland Primitive Baptist Association, Dr. J. L. Fitzgerald and the Chairman of the Board, Elder Lowery Mooney and the date was set for December 11, 1999, to constitute the Antioch Mission into the Antioch Church.

On December 11, 1999, at 11:00 a.m., Elder B. L. Russell called the service to order. The service took place and the committee of Elders met. The Antioch Mission was examined on the Articles of Faith, Church Covenant, number of members baptized, the Word of God, etc. When the invitation was extended over 60 people united by Christian experience. Elder B. L. Russell was voted as the first and founding pastor of the Antioch Primitive Baptist Church. After all was satisfied, the Antioch Mission was officially constituted into a church and was given the right-hand of fellowship by the Constituting Committee.

The Antioch P.B. Church continued to grow by the grace of God, believing that God would soon take them to another level. After months of praying, with our deacons and trustees looking at property site after property site, it was then that God in His mystical way blessed the Antioch P.B. Church with a Church building. It did not take long for this vibrant church to turn this house into the Antioch P. B. Church home, located at 1001 N. Spring Street. On December 3, 2000, we dedicated the church edifice to our Heavenly Father with Pastor Lowery Mooney and the St. Luke P.B. Church and friends of Murfreesboro as our special guest.

God has blessed Antioch Primitive Baptist Church to continue to fulfill the teaching, preaching and reaching ministry of God.
